An early influential farming book, largely based on French practices "Compyled in the French tongue by Charles Stevens and John Liebault / translated into English by Richard Surflet / Now newly reviewed, corrected and augmented, etc., by Gervase Markham." Third edition in English, edited and with additions by Gervase Markham; a translation of L'agriculture et maison rustique, an augmented French language translation by Liebault of Estienne's Praedium rusticum. In seven parts: The First Booke of the Countrie Farme; The Second Booke of the Countrie House - Of Gardens; The Third Booke of the Countrie Farme; The Fourth Booke of the Countrie House; The Fifth Booke of the Countrie House - Of Arable Grounds; The Sixth Booke of the Countrie House - The Vine; The Seventh Booke of the Countrie Farme - The Warren. Each part with headpiece, each chapter with decorated intial capital, text with woodcut illustrations & figures. Of (20)732(24) pages in the complete work, this copy missing all preliminary leaves and title, 14 leaves of paginated text (beginning at B1), and all leaves after Rrr4 (unpaginated indexes). First Booke: pp1-152 (in incorrect order between pages 27 & 34); missing L3, L4, N3 & N4; B1 heavily soiled, worm-holed, with substantial loss to upper & fore-edge margins, with a little loss to marginal notes, and almost detached; B2 soiled to lesser extent, and chipped at edges but with no loss of print. Second: pp153-332; missing T4, T6, Y6, Aa2, Aa3 & Bb1. Third: pp333-490; missing Kk1 & Rr3; Ss5 & Ss6 damaged with only minor loss; Kk5 a little soiled. Fourth: pp491-516; no missing leaves, complete. Fifth: pp517-590; no missing leaves; Yy3 & Yy4 damaged with substantial loss, Ccc3 damaged with loss of text towards upper outer corner, Yy1 damaged with minor loss. Sixth: pp591-643: no missing leaves, complete. Seventh Booke: pp644-732; missing Lll2 & Nnn3. Eight leaves - T4, Y4, Aa1, Nn6, Pp1, Vu6, Xx6 & Ccc1 - with sizeable closed or nearly-closed tears, some of which amateurishly repaired, but with no loss. A number of margins a little grubby and/or dampstained and/or chipped at edges and/or with minor closed tears. Of 36 illustrations and figures present, three with degrees of damage. Of indexes beginning at Rrr1, only part of the first ('A Table of the Matters') remains; Rrr4 soiled. Some 25 leaves with additions, corrections, inscriptions or doodles, mainly unobtrusive. Occasional worm holes & trails mainly confined to upper and inner margins, damage very minimal. Contents generally lightly toned, with occasional light spotting and variable mainly-light degrees of dustiness, and with a number of creased corners. Edges of text-block grubby. Near contemporary full calf binding, spine with four raised bands, boards with hardly visible blindstamped panels within which blindstamped decorations; very worn, with loss, but still holding firmly. Missing endpapers.
