Elegance from the banks of the Mississippi River. Captured here in print are the portraits of lofty estates and humble cottages along the banks of the mighty river. This picturesque landscape found nowhere else in the country is a delight. Both interiors and exteriors of many of the homes have been restored to their original glory and surrounded with beautiful gardens. A brief history of each building augments the majestic images.
From the Inside Flap:
Presented here in spectacular color photographs are more than 160 images of quaint cottages and elegant plantations found in St. Francisville and its environs. Many of the buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and have been returned to their former glory by residents dedicated to preserving the cultural identity of the architecture and landscapes.
Featured buildings include the charming Victorian cottage of Catalpa with double-dormer windows and the first baby carriage in the South, the salt-box structure of the Camilla Leake Barrow House, the classical offices of the Clinton Courthouse, and the brick plantation house named Live Oak, now owned by the woman who fell in love with it in a painting in 1930. Each home features typical period construction details, wonderfully restored interiors, and many of the original furnishings.
Award-winning photographer Kerri McCaffety lends her unique vision to capturing the lovely details and the weight of history trapped within the walls of these treasured homes. Each selection of photographs is accompanied by Lee Malone's brief history of the featured building and the families who persevered to maintain, restore, and preserve our nation's architectural heritage.
Kerri McCaffety counts among her accolades a Gold Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers and an Author of the Year award from the New Orleans Gulf South Booksellers Association. Her books with Pelican include Obituary Cocktail: The Great Saloons of New Orleans; The Majesty of St. Charles Avenue; Etouffe, Mon Amour: The Great Restaurants of New Orleans; Napoleon House; and St. Joseph Altars, among others.
Lee Malone (1916-2008), along with her late husband, critically acclaimed photographer Paul Malone, collaborated on several photography books about the Louisiana area. Her detailed research on the families and personalities bring a personal background to the homes and buildings. Together, they created six books depicting the true beauty behind many of Louisiana's historic sites: Louisiana Plantation Homes: A Return to Splendor, Louisiana Plantation Homes Postcard Book, The Majesty of New Orleans, The Majesty of the Garden District, The Majesty of the Garden District Postcard Book, and The Majesty of the River Road.
