About this title

Making It Happen is a teenage novel about three urban high school students from Washington, DC. The story begins with strong details of Renee's struggles to overcome harsh family issues and her incredible ability, to maintain her grades as a senior on the honor roll. Her elderly grandfather raised her and made sure that she had an understanding of his expectations about how important it was for them to respect and communicate with each other daily. Renee' has two close friends who are doing quite well in school as well, Vicki and Shawny. Unlike Renee' the two girls have their parents in their lives. Though different yet quite the same, Vicki's parents are her big brother and their Auntie. (They were the ones who raised her) Her parents were drug addicts. She constantly witnessed her filthy dope fiend parents, scheming their way through several drug-stripes throughout the neighborhoods where she hung out and from time to time, she'd say a couple of jokes about them or to them as she passed them by. Shawny on the other hand, her parent were high school sweetheart who grew up in the dangerous area of south-east DC together, graduated college, got married, had a child and moved themselves into a nice sub urban home on the outskirt of DC. They wanted a better life for their child but just as teens are today. She knew what was best for her, (so she thought). This novel is a page-turner. It's touching. You will laugh, cry and learn the values of being a better family member after reading it. Making It Happen will give teens something to think about if they are involved with dealing drugs, having unprotected sex, and most importantly, it will encourage them to gain respect for adults as well as obtain the ability to have great judgment and most of all self-respect.

About the Author:

Stewart graduated from Cardozo Senior High School, Washington, DC in 1991, attended Lemon G. Hines Jr. High School, and McGogney Elementary School, in Washington, DC. She is currently living in San Francisco, California where she is attending the Academy of Art College. Her major is Interior Architecture and Design. After school, Stewart's goal is to go into set designing for a major television or film company. She's also in the process of receiving trademark/patent rights, for a pedicure slipper that she invented, and as you can see she loves to write and visualize. When asked what inspired her to create such a keen story about urban life. Stewart said, "I would like to start something new for those teenagers, who has nothing but time on their hands after school. I believe a lot of teenagers don't like the situations they're in, but because of their surroundings and misguided choices, they continue to live the lifestyles of being thugs, marijuana smokers, sexually active and a high risk for catching a sexual transmitted disease, or in some cases a parent before their time. These are issues that I am concerned with because adults are not teaching these young people that they do matter and are needed." Stewart wants to give them another avenue to take other than hip-hop music and what's the hottest gear to wear. She would like to see young people reading again and learning from the careless characters in her novels. In this particular novel, she said that she wanted the world to know, there are grandfathers who carry a strong role in the family too, it's not always Big Momma who's teaching and holding the family together. Behind every great woman, stands a great man.
