About this Item

240pp, some minor water damage prelims and last leaves, dustjacket rubbed and bumped extremities, now protected, a good readable copy. An English doctor and a young woman from New England arrive on the Polynesian island of Fenua Lei. While the doctor reforms the local hospital, Miss Frobisher causes trouble by investigating the island's most sacred shrine. A series of disasters, including a hurricane - very rare in the islands - and the birth of a defective child to the chief's wife brings down upon Miss Frobisher the wrath of the islanders. Their answer is Makutu - a kind of spell with which the Polynesians will a victim to death. Tom and Lydia Davis write with expert knowledge of the Polynesian beliefs and rites, having lived in the South Seas for many years and know of many actual instances of the use of Makutu. This novel transports the reader to a land both far away and distant in human beliefs. Bookseller Inventory # 141436

Shipping Terms:

The shipping prices quoted on ABEBooks reflect what we have found to be the "average book". Of course in reality there are many books that do not weigh what an "average book" weighs so there are times when we need to requote shipping, just as there are times when we are in position to refund some of the shipping. Please rest assured we try to get your order to you for a reasonable price, as quickly and as well packed (we carefully pack all of our parcels in book boxes) as possible.
