About this Item

presumably the first edition, first printing (not stated); from the library of the anthropologist, William H. Gilbert, with his inscription on the front cover and the title page (probably bought in 1936 in preparation for his forthcoming round the world trip in September 1937 to March 1938), no other markings; a ca 1.5 cm tear at the crown of the sunned spine, otherwise in remarkably good condition considering its age and paper covers, overall rating Near Fine; the first printing of this hard-to-find book would be of interest to collectors of well-preserved older works on the Malayalam languge, and the Dravidian languages and India generally; one of Marlborough's early 20th century Self-Taught Series; paper covers are blue with black lettering on the front and spine and a listing of Marlborough's Self-Taught Series on the back; 12mo - 7 1/8 inches tall, 136 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
