Small 4to. Red cloth, pictorial dust jacket. xvii, 492pp. Illustrations. Near fine/very good. Faint jacket edgewear. Just a book club edition, but tight and handsome -- and bearing an exceptional autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a superb content Typed Letter Signed from Oates, 1p, 8½" X 11", Amherst, MA, 16 October 1975. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Oates writes in part, "Here is Part One of my Lincoln biography. Feel free to mark in corrections and comments on the margins. I hope you will look particularly for factual mistakes. I'll pretty much stand by my interpretations, but in a long book like mine, I know how easily it is for factual slips to get in no matter how hard one tries to be accurate and careful. You've no idea how much I appreciate your agreeing to criticize my work." Signed simply "Stephen" in black ballpoint. Intriguing, since Oates was charged with plagiarism with this book in a highly-publicized brouhaha -- charges which he brilliantly dissected in a stirring self-defense. Gates appears in the preface (p. xvii) of this book, where Oates notes, "I want especially to thank Arnold Gates, lifelong Lincoln scholar and literary editor of the 'Lincoln Herald,' who read the manuscript with a sharp eye and furnished a rigorous and detailed critique.".
