Synopsis: 2 Volume Boxed Set

About the Author: Robert Musil was born in Klagenfurt, Austria, in 1880. Trained in science and philosophy, he left a career in the military to turn to writing. The publication of his novel Young Torless in 1906 brought him international recognition and remains a classic parable on the misuse of power. After serving in the First World War, Musil lived alternately in Vienna and Berlin, with much of his time being dedicated to the slow writing of his masterwork, The Man Without Qualities. In 1938, when Hitler's rise to power threatened Musil's work with being banned in both Austria and Germany, he emigrated to Switzerland, where he and his wife lived until his death in 1942. The first complete German edition of The Man Without Qualities finally appeared in 1978.

Book Description Picador, 1995. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. This is a fine, UK first edition hardback in a fine dust wrapper. There are no marks or inscriptions of any kind. The text block is tight white and square. The black boards are pristine as is the gilt lettering to the spine. The unclipped dust wrapper is complete, crisp and vibrant. The original price of £18.99 remains. The dust wrapper is now protected by a removable, acid free acetate sleeve. The book presents as new and as unread. A clever and erudite work from Mr Brook, an eminent academic and award winning author. The UK edition of this work was published with a very small print run; hence the scarcity of such first editions. A worthy book that would grace any serious collection or library centered on the art world. The images you see are high resolution scans of the actual book you will receive. It will be dispatched via The Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. We offer a 7 day no quibble full refund if the item is not as described and shown. Extra scans are available on request. Bookseller Inventory # 10437
