About this Item

Stated second edition. Green printed wraps. 12 pp. A sermon primarily addressing slavery and the complicity of the North in allowing it to continue through the nomination and election of Zachary Taylor. Higginson addresses the Whigs in his audience, stating that Taylor was the choice of the ultra slavery powers and that the North wants slavery to continue for economic reasons. He also mentions Frederick Douglass and his speeches, speaking to his power and eloquence, and states that he cannot preach peace as there is no peace in the United States. Thomas Wentworth Higginson was a militant abolitionist, being a member of the disunion abolitionists and arguing for the disobeying of the Fugitive Slave Law. He was a colonel in the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first authorized African-American regiment, and continued to fight for the rights of freed slaves after the war. VERY GOOD condition. Minor soiling and darkening to the wraps. A few minor creases. Faint date stamp to the lower rear cover. See Sabin 31755 for this (among others). Bookseller Inventory # 007846
