Merrill Library in Newburyport. Antiquarian call tag affixed to spine and pastedown. Old hand ownership of Haverhill on front board top right corner. Dampness staining and soiling to surface of hardcover. Ink splattering to boards. Spine soiled and worn with loss at tail. Old hand ownership of J. Davis on front fly leaf. Dampness staining to gutters. Offsetting from frontis onto title. Colored plates remain bright and clean. Internally toned with areas of patchy foxing and light age staining. Free of known marginalia. Binding intact. Please see photos. First edition of this popular work that went through four editions by 1839. Jonathan Holmes Cobb (1799-1882) was a Massachusetts lawyer and pioneer silk manufacturer. When the Mulberry tree was introduced in the United States in the eighteen-twenties, he was among the earliest and most enthusiastic experimenters. His success conceived state legislatures of the practicality of silk production in Massachusetts. Mulberry trees were seen as industrious and moral trees where farmers could finally compete with capitalists. At the start of the 1830 s Mulberry trees were sold three for one hundred and later $3 for just one. The market crashed by the end of the 1840 s and Mulberry s popularity sunk. The tree was associated with anti-slavery movements and the Underground Railroad, most famously with Sojourner Truth who worked on a mulberry farm in Northampton, Massachusetts.
