About this Item

first edition, ex-library, the Surgeon General's Office, with the usual stickers and stamps; acquired by the anthropologist, William H. Gilbert, at Lowdermilks in Washington, DC, March 14, 1962, with Gilbert's inscription on the front free endpaper, and given to me (Glenn Gilbert), Jan. 3, 1979, with my bookplate pasted on the inside front cover; evidently little read, corners and edges bumped and rubbed, spine chipped at top ca 4 cm along one side and spine starting to split, still in remarkably good condition for its age, overall rating G to VG; this is a first edition of Nicholson's first major work, published shortly after he joined the faculty of the Univ. of Toronto; Stephen Jay Gould was much influenced and impressed by Nicholson's work to the extent that he issued a revised version of The Ancient Life History of the Earth (1877) in 1980; this book would be of interest to collectors of early editions of books on paleontology that appeared after The Origin of Species but still during Darwin's lifetime; bound in dark blue cloth with gold lettering on the spine and embossed gold spiral shell on front, 8vo - 8 1/8 inches tall, xvi + 601 pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
