Manuscript Album having 134 neat & legible pages written in ink, with the remainder blank. 8vo. (187x120mm), with ownership signature to front pastedown endpaper of 'Miss Sarah Godson,/ Upper Montagu Street,/ Montagu Square,/ 1833,34,35 & 36' and beneath a pink label with black border of 'W. Creswick, Paper Maker…. Oxford Street'. Front free endpaper inscribed in ink 'Oxley and Son/Elizabeth Place/ Westminster'. In the same hand throughout commencing with Medical Receipts and Recipes incl. Wine Making, Knitting Instructions and even a humourous Receipt for Love, but the majority of domestic interest. Included for 1850 from Miss E. Godson, Tenbury is an invoice for '12 weeks schooling for M.A. Reynolds. 3".0'. April 23rd. Settled J. Roberts'. Bound in half calf, marbled boards, marbled edges, with later paper label to spine 'Recipe's' lettered by hand, rubbed, small loss of marbling and calf rubbed to top corner, however sound, tight and very good condition. The manuscript of Miss Sarah Godson. The 1861 census lists Sarah Godson, age 56, living at Court House in Tenbury Wells, along with Margaret and Eliza, all three unmarried. Sarah Godson is still living with Margaret at Court House in the 1871 census, but her age is listed as 69. Album formerly owned by Sarah Godson of Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, England. The Godson family can be credited with adding the 'Wells' to Tenbury having discovered the Well with its beneficial properties on their land in the 1830's. Included 'Cure for the Cholera', and a bundle of Receipts loosely inserted majority handwritten, 'For the cow who was relaxed in her body'. 'Gooseberry Wine', 'Hooping Cough', 'Receipt of Mr Sayer for Soup for the Poor', 'A recipe for the toothache', 'Receipt for bad breath' Some originally in newspapers et al with many attributed to local people incl. Lady B. from Madresfield, Mother's, Mr. Stephen Godson, Captain Elliott, Coachman's Receipt, Mrs Pregnall, Captain Bagnold et al. Also loosely inserted a printed flyer - a single sheet folding into four pages 'Piesse's Odophone: or Gamut of Odours', no date but available from Mr.Septimus Piesse and fully described in his Treatise "The Art of Perfumery", published 1855. 8vo. (217x139mm), browned with two creases from folding. Piesse was seemingly convinced that the pleasantness of musical harmony resembles that of perfumes (consisting of various base notes), and he presented a scale of correspondences between sounds and odours, as he believed that "there is, as it were, an octave of odours like an octave in music".See The New York Public Library - Carl H.
