World War II?era collection of typed, handwritten, and newspaper-clipped recipes, assembled on the Isle of Man. A wide variety of hands copied recipes onto the pages of this attractively bound volume ? generally for good solid everyday dishes such as stuffed tomatoes, salad dressing, salmon pie, potted chicken, fruit fritters, cheese scones, etc. A few items seem particularly community-specific, like "Mrs. Gardiner's Birthday Cake," with others having what must be local attributions (Mrs. Crabbe, Nurse Key). At the back of the book are a few domestic and medicinal recipes, including a cough mixture, "recipe for lumbago," "rheumatism specialist receipt," hair wash, and instructions for bleaching clothes. The laid-in clippings, letters, and recipes are of interest: some are war-related, like the newsprint instructions for bottling tomatoes captioned "Fruit & Vegetables - Preserve for Victory" and the 1955 opinion piece on housewives' regrettable lack of awareness regarding cuts of beef following years of wartime meat scarcity. => One recipe is written on the back of a manuscript letter, dated 1943, which includes notice that the letter writer has "removed from No. 7 Meadow Bank (bombed out)." Provenance: A laid-in handwritten slip proclaims this "Auntie Doris Lamb's recipe book," and a letter from Odhams Press Ltd. to Mrs. Lamb acknowledges her correctness in having pointed out that a recipe for Soup Dumplings with Cheese in Modern Cookery Illustrated should have included butter and cheese in the ingredients list. Mrs. Lamb resided at Glen Villa in the parish of Lonan, Isle of Man, as documented by several items, including a retained copy of a letter from her husband Frank to a gentleman looking to buy a bungalow on the island. 4to (21 cm, 8.25"). [326 (approx. 90 used)] pp. Publisher's black pebbled roan, front cover with gilt-stamped title and "jeweled" corners stamped in gilt, red, and black; leather with mild scuffs overall. Hinges (inside) reinforced some time ago; pastedowns each with one strip of old cellophane tape. Title-page with printed label reading "No. 62" affixed beneath title; varying degrees of offsetting to pages and wear to laid-in items. While a number of the pages bound in this capacious volume are unused, between the inscribed items and the laid-in items there is => an impressive amount of substantive content here.
