Book Description Hard Cover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Art (illustrator). 1st. The sub-title to this important addition to the literature on Maori medicines and treatment describes it as a "New Zealand Ethnobotanical Sourcebook" and although it was initially published in the mid-1990s it can still be considered as the most comprehensive and detailed contemporary publication on the subject. Running to more than 500 pages the book has two major sections: Part One dealing with Maori Healing And Health Topics with a survey of Maori health and healing from pre-European time up to the 1990s, The topics covered range from ailements, injuries to blisters. There are more than 80 individual entries (alphabetically arranged) in Part One with topic headings ranging from abortion, blood cleaning and purifiers, constipation, diabetes, fractures, goitre, insect bites, measles and smallpox, rheumatism, teeth and gums, concluding with yeast infection. Each topic explains whether an ailment existed historically or introduced, ancient lore and rituals relating to tratments, plus the herbal remedies used with references to early mentions of treatment or remedies. The topics continue to page 112 where the 200+ entries on Maori Herbal Remedies begin. These are also listed alphabetically, headed with the Maori name or names, English language name and the scientific description. The text traces the pattern of medicinal use of the plant including its legendry and historical origins, treaments are listed according to external or internal application, again with refrences to earlier commentary .Each botanical entry is illustrated with a colour photograph of that plant, taken by Brian Enting. The front flap notes that "Maori Healing and Herbal" does not claim to be complete as "indeed this is impossible. given the secrecy surrounduing the ruituals, practices and healing methods of individual tribes, iwi." It also points out that the opening topics section is "particularly valuable since it draws together all available information on spiritual healing and directs the reader to the relevant herbs." Author Murdoch Riley has produced several other books on NZ botanical subjects and Maori plant usage, with others dealing with Maori traditional lore, culture and ceremony.; His "Maori Healing and Herbal" won the non-fiction section in the NZ Book Awards of 1995 --- the best possible recognation of the book's merit. First edition of 1994 from Viking Sevenseas, 528 pages including bibliography and index, with glossary explaining Maori names etc near front, illustrated with colour photo frontis, related historic drawing in early pages and Brian Enting's colour photographs complement each of the more than 200 plants and herbs described in Part Two.
