Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Backed with archival lining. Original 8vo format green cloth covers removed but present. Image measures 31" x 25" This detailed folding map by S.R. Stoddard offers one of the most influential late-19th-century portrayals of the Adirondack region of northern New York. Published in 1882, this map served as both a practical guide for tourists and an advocacy tool for wilderness preservation. The map delineates lakes, rivers, mountains, towns, rail lines, and transportation routes. Topography is rendered by hachure, and mountains are labeled with elevation heights. Air-line distances from Mount Marcy are indicated by concentric circles - a fascinating inclusion for the time period, referring to distances "as the crow flies" rather than actual air travel, which was not invented for another twenty years. Seneca Ray Stoddard (1844-1917) was an American photographer, publisher, writer, and cartographer best known for his vivid documentation of the Adirondack region of New York. Based in Glens Falls, he produced thousands of landscape photographs, travel guides, and maps that promoted the area as a destination for tourists and nature lovers. Stoddard's work combined artistic vision with advocacy, helping to shape public appreciation of wilderness preservation. His 1882 Map of the Adirondack Wilderness and illustrated travel books were instrumental in the movement that led to the creation of the Adirondack Forest Preserve.
