About this Item

1 sheet (22 x 27 cm.). Apparently removed from the Fifth General Report of the President and Directors of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Company (1824). Shows the route of the original canal. A former owner marked the route of the canal in red and noted the length (14 miles, 76 feet), as well as two other possible routes further south, with their length in feet over 14 miles (72 and 66 feet). Presumably these were other routes that had been considered and rejected. The Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Company was incorporated in Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania in 1802 and construction of the canal began two years later. However, progress stopped two years because of insufficient funding. The canal company was reorganized in 1822, and stock was sold to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, the federal government, and the public, allowing construction to resume in 1824. Completed in 1829, the canal ran from the Back Creek branch of the Elk River, emptying into Chesapeake Bay, along St. George's Creek to Newbold's Landing and into the Delaware River. The United States government bought the canal in 1919 and it is now operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which also runs the C&D Canal Museum at Chesapeake City, Md. In Very Good Condition: small chip at upper right-hand corner and along top edge, impacting only the border; other minor chipping, not impacting map; 1 vertical fold and 2 horizontal folds; slight browning along edges; former owner notations, as described; otherwise clean.
