This interesting map of the Des Plaines River is one of fourteen sheets designed by members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for an early 20th-century Congressional report detailing the waterway between Chicago and the mouth of the Illinois River. As Number 13 in the set, the image captures the river between the Windy City and its sparsely populated western suburbs. The Illinois and Michigan Sanitary and Ship Canals are prominently featured, along with railroads and survey points. A base contour map highlights the contrast between the relatively flat metropolitan area and the hillier outlying region. Drawn by Earl G. Marsh under the authority of Assistant Engineer J.W. Woermann. Published in Washington, D.C. by the Government Printing Office in 1905 Sheet Width (in) 26.5 Sheet Height (in) 16.25 Condition Description Soft creasing and toning along originally issued fold lines, most evident in the lower left and center. A few small tears around the outer edges, confined to the margins. Good to very good overall.
