About this Item

Plate 48 from the Library Reference Atlas. John Bartholomew & Son, Ltd. has been publishing maps and atlases from the 19th century to the present day. In 1797, George Bartholomew began work as a map engraver in Edinburgh, and founded the cartographical establishment The Geographical Institute. He later trained his son, John Bartholomew, in cartography and map publishing. After working as the assistant to the German geographer August Petermann, John took over management of his father's firm in 1856. Under his direction, The Geographical Institute built a reputation in Great Britain for the production of the finest cartographical work. After John Bartholomew's death, The Geographical Institute has continued to have a distinguished reputation in map publishing. Bookseller Inventory # 000249
