About this title

Using "mapping" as a metaphor for interpreting the signs of the times, this book uses science, history, philosophy, and theology to seek a religious interpretation of life, without dogma or arrogance. Chapter One focuses on the emerging global village as the distinctive event on our planet as we enter a new millenium. Chapter Two attempts to deal with facts to the contrary - ethnic and national idolatry, tyranny and chaos. Chapter Three centers upon the role of the individual in the larger scheme of things - human rights and responsibilities. Chapter Four is concerned with the role of nature - its management, mismanagement, and the legacy we will leave to our children. Chapter Five suggests the role of religion in a pluralistic world, the common concerns of religions in ecological reverence, and the role of religious communities to be the conscience of the culture, anticipating tomorrows planet.

About the Author:

J. Edward Barrett retired in 1995 from his position as Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Muskingum College in Ohio, and now lives in Highlands, North Carolina. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and has previously published two books: HOW ARE YOU PROGRAMMED? and FAITH IN FOCUS. "Global Issues and Values" was his most popular course when he was teaching. He has lived more than five years abroad, traveled in more than thirty-five countries and was a witness to the bloodshed in Beijing, China, in 1989. In 1993 he was Program Chair for the Second International Conference on Philosophical Theology, held in St. Andrews, Scotland. He is an active member of the Highlands Institute for American Religious and Philosophical Thought - an international community of productive scholars interested in the interface between religion and philosophy, that meets annually in Highlands. He owns a small, live-aboard sailboat, and with his wife, Suzanne, cruises the coastal water of the United States for several months each year.
