About this Item

"Mari folk art has its roots in olden times when the old Mari nationality was coming into being. Old Mari tribes called Parmis or Cheremis, whuch the present Mari people came from, emerged in the tenth century A.D. It was the time of formation of the single Old Mari language belonging to Ugro-Finnish languages but heavily influenced by Turkic ones. The features of culture and life typical of the single nationality got into being. Historically, the single Mari nationality later fell into three ethnographic groups: Meadow, Mountain and Eastern Mari. The combination of old Mari traditions and modern styles is perfectly manifested in the works of artist Jury Kondakov whose creative activity is aimed at studying image-bearing and craft traditions of his people. Natural gift and good artistic education made it possible for him to discover secrets of old craftsmen and create works being traditional and at the same time perfectly modern." The book has 270 pages and is profusely illustrated. The text is written in RUSSIAN {CYRILLIC}/MARI. In addition, there is a seven page overview of the text written in ENGLISH/HUNGARIAN.Overall, A VERY GOOD copy with VERY GOOD dust jacket with slipcase. Bookseller Inventory # 055388
