About this title

Kerstin Specht’s award-winning play chronicles the triumph and tragedy of writer Marieluise Fleisser. Fleisser reached her peak of fame in 1920s Berlin, when her plays were directed by Bertolt Brecht. A devastating personal and creative collapse followed, as she was ostracized by the literary establishment, her family, and the men in her life. Her work would not be again recognized until several decades later. This volume also includes Specht’s The Time of the Tortoise.

About the Author:

"Kerstin Specht was born in Germany in 1956 and has written many plays. Her play 'Marieluise' won the 2002 National Award for Drama from Baden-Wurttemberg, and is published by Oberon in a translation by Rachael McGill. Rachael McGill has written for stage and television, including translations from French and German for the National Theatre and Channel Four. Her translation of 'Marieluise' by Kerstin Specht was awarded the Gate Theatre Translation Award 2004. "
