About this Item

Sewn binding. Cloth over boards. 359 p. Illustrations (some in color). Suggested Reading. Index. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for providing power projection, using the mobility of the United States Navy to, by Congressional mandate, rapidly-deliver combined-arms task forces on land, at sea and in the air. The U.S. Marine Corps is one of the four armed service branches in the Department of Defense and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The Marine Corps has been a component of the U.S. Navy since 1834, working closely with naval forces for training, transportation, and logistics. Two battalions of Continental Marines were formed on 10 November 1775 in Philadelphia as a service of infantry troops capable of fighting for independence both at sea and land. The Marine Corps has distinguished itself as it has served in the majority of American wars and armed conflicts, and attained prominence when its theories and practices of amphibious warfare formed the cornerstone of the Pacific theater. Review:

Semper Fidelis (always faithful), is much more than a motto to the US Marine Corps, it is a way of life. Since 1775, the Marines' success as an elite fighting force has been due to their strong code of character and esprit de corps, the spirit of devotion to the Corps and to their fellow Marines. Now, for the first time, the spirit and essence of the Marine Corps is celebrated in a definitive, magnificently illustrated book. Written by an outstanding team, including past and present Commandants of the Marine Corps, as well as other distinguished Marines and Marine scholars, The Marines has riveting and informative text and stories of the Corps experience: from the history and future of the Corps; to the uniforms, weaponry, amphibious landing craft and aviation; to the Marine Band; the Commandants; and even Hollywood's portrayal of the Marines. The thoughtful incorporation of full colour and vintage photography, portraits, recruiting posters, historically inspired paintings, and maps complement the text. --David Kirk

This book is incredible! A perfect gift for the Marine on your list, or for people interested in the USMC. It's beautifully bound, but even better written. And all of that is complimented by fantastic photographs. --Larry Petersen

I purchased this book for my father to give to him this Christmas. He is a retired Lt. Col. in the Marine Corps and served his country in World War II, Korea, as well as Vietnam. This volume is an absolutely stunning and moving history of the United States Marine Corps. The rich blue cloth cover with large gold (3-D)Marine Corps emblem on the frontpiece will blow you away....its beautiful. I'm sure my father will cherish this book for a long, long time. --Hermann Frickenschmidt
