An Historical Tragedy in Five Acts. With Notes. The Prophecy of Dante, A Poem. London: John Murray, 1821. Pp. xxi, 261, [1, imprint]. Octavo, later half calf and marbled boards. Backstrip missing (hinge cracked apart at pp. ix-x) and boards detached. New endleaves. Title page opening inexpertly repaired with glue at inner hinge. Internal contents otherwise very good and all present. First Edition, First Issue with the Doge's speech on page 151 consisting of five and a half lines. Tinker 577; Wise II/30. This copy with all half-titles but without ad at back. Marino Faliero (1274-1355) was commander of Venetian forces in 1346 when he defeated Louis I of Hungary. Soon after his election as doge of Venice (1353-1355) ".the Genoese triumphed over the Venetians, and Faliero, at odds with patricians who had insulted his family, joined dissatisfied plebeians in a conspiracy to assassinate the nobles, overthrow the oligarchy, and make Faliero dictator. The plot was discovered; Faliero and his accomplices, tried by the Council of Ten were executed. Faliero's life has inspired works by Byron, Swinburne, Delavigne, Delacroix, and Donizetti."
