About this Item

4to. Stiff pale orange printed wrappers. (4pp), 17pp. Green floral decorative border on text pages. Very good. Bit of uneven age toning to outer wrappers (only), else tight, bright and internally near fine. Probable sole printing of this strange poem about the Boer War of 1899, dedicated to General Christian De Wet -- the light orange wrappers certainly a veiled reference to South Africa's Orange Free State. Sleeper compares De Wet, a rebel leader who favored guerrilla warfare tactics, to Francis Marion, general of the American Revolution, who is considered a pioneer in the use of guerrilla warfare. John Fremont Sleeper (1861-1941) was an eccentric poet, author and chemist who penned a number of pamphlets, mainly concerning turn-of-the-century political issues. Although the copyright page notes "Ordinary Edition -- 10,000 Copies," we question the veracity of this statement, for it's anything but ordinary -- copies rarely come on the market. A lovely copy of this very scarce publication. Bookseller Inventory # 38256
