About this Item

Cloth, 28 cm. Signed copy of the definitive biography of this FSA photographer. Hard to find in hardcover this copy is better yet in that it is one of few copies signed by Marion Post Wolcott. Signed on the half-title 'Marion Post Wolcott / June 1989'. Born June 7, 1910, she was a staff photographer at the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin when she met Roy Stryker through Ralph Steiner. She was immediately hired by Stryker and sent to photograph West Virginia coal miners. Unlike other FSA photographers she also took photographs of the wealthy and she is also known for her photographs of African-Americans of the same decade. She dropped out of photography as a career when she married in 1941 but never really gave up photography taking photographs on her farm and later overseas in her travels. Lee Witkin, Judy Dater and Jack Welpott was instrumental in a revival of interest in her work in the late 70's when they sought her out in her Mendocino home. She died November 24, 1990 a little more than a year after this book was published. Very good in very good dustjacket. Bookseller Inventory # 49694
