About this Item

First edition. Small octavo in emerald green cloth lettered in gilt, front board with small gilt decoration. 272 pp. A tight, generally fine example, touch of rubbing at the spine extremities. Neat pencil gift inscrition dated 1874 first blank. "Marjorie Daw" was Aldrich's most famous short stories; published in 1869 in periodical form, it appears here in book form for the first time. It is told in the form of a correspondence between two friends, Edward Delaney and John Flemming, begun when Flemming is laid up with a broken leg. To cheer him up, Delaney invents a beautiful young woman who lives in a tropically-located colnial piazza--Marjorie Daw. The unfortunate Flemming, as result of these letters, falls i love with the ficticious Marjorie and, at the story's conclusion, must be told, "There isn't any colonial mansion. there isn't any piazza.there isn't any Marjorie Daw!" (BAL 276). Bookseller Inventory # GE16764
