About this Item

With Illustrations by John Cecil Clay. Boston and New York, 1908. Medium octavo, original red publisher's cloth ornately stamped in gold. Top edge gilt. 124 pages. Ink inscription (dated 1910) on front endleaf. A very good to fine copy. BAL 402. First Illustrated Edition, and first separate book edition for this story, which first appeared as the title story of a collection of stories published in 1873. A handsome little Riverside Press book. The friend of an invalid invents the enchanting Marjorie Daw to relieve the tedium of illness, by sharing with him the letters he receives from her. Well, the invalid falls in love with Marjorie Daw (this is light-years before Freud was in vogue) and that's as far as we got. Bookseller Inventory # 5316
