About this title

Synopsis:

Eleven-year-old Mark tries to find a solution to two of his most pressing problems--how to stop the Skinner brothers from bullying him and how to save his friend's, old Mrs. McSwiggen's, property from land developers

From School Library Journal:

Grade 5-7 At 11, Mark has problems: he is being picked on by bullies, he feels that his mother doesn't love him as much as his brother or sister, and he finds that a beloved neighbor is being forced to move so that a shopping center can be built. But he also has some ideas: if he can make enough money at his rummage sale, he can buy a weightlifting set, work out, and take on the bullies. None of his solutions work, yet Mark is far from a loser. His persistence and caring helps his mother to win a contest, encourages his sister to study for GED, and saves his friend's house from the wrecker. Although slow starting, with some stereotypic characters and a predictible plot, the book does have a few strengths. Potter shows good comic timing, juggling a variety of crazy events and letting them fall at just the right time. The book ends just as readers expect and wish that it will, with Mark a winner, and this may cause them to overlook the book's flaws.Karen K. Radtke, Milwaukee Public Library
