About this Item

Entire Autumn issue, October 15, 1933, in original colorful Edward A. Wilson cover, light-only general wear, spine ends nicked a slight, light rubbing noted along rear spine, overall a rather presentable copy of this very scarce issue. In this, the first issue of Esquire, the author contributed his first of a series of "letters" that would continue through February, 1939. This one is illustrated with 17 photographs of the author and second wife Pauline Pfeiffer fishing and landing marlin. One photo shows a young John Hemingway with a small marlin. Issue includes other non-fiction from Nicholas Murray Butler, Gilbert Seldes, Ring Lardner, Jr., and Charles Hanson Towne, fiction from John Dos Passos, Morley Callaghan, William McFee, Erskine Caldwell, Robert Buckner, Dashiell Hammett, Manuel Komroff, David Hoadley Munroe, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Dan Muller, Vincent Starrett, semi-fiction from P-173, sports from golf master and champion Bobby Jones, boxer Gene Tunney, Benny Leonard, and Charley Paddock, poetry from Audrey Wurdemann, and Joseph Auslander, book notes from James T. Farrell, humorous sketches and essays from George Ade, Geoffrey Kerr, George S. Chappell, Montague Glass, and Harry Hershfield, photography from Gilbert Seehausen, and Paul Trebilcock, and cartoons from C. Alajalov, William Steig, E. Simms Campbell, John Groth, George Petty, Nat Karson, and Ty Mahon. Please note specific to this first issue of Esquire, two different sizes were released. The folio issue, sized 10 x 14 inches, the size most always seen with Esquire, was printed in a run of about 100,000 copies which quickly sold out at newsstands. The present issue, sized 7.75 x 11 inches, was printed for reasons we have been unable to determine, perhaps as a test format given its status as the first issue of the magazine. It is identical to the larger format issue except in size, and we have not been able to determine what number of these smaller format copies were issued although it must certainly have been a much smaller number than the larger size as this is the only copy we have handled since we started selling books in 1985. Very scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 018657
