About this Item

First Printing. Crown 8vo: vi,128,[2]pp. Publisher's grey paper-covered boards lettered in lime-green, olive-green linen spine stamped in matching green. An excellent copy, with light fading to spine lettering and dust-soiled top edge the only flaws. "Unlike most first editions of Appleton books, the small Arabic (1) on the final page of text was omitted." (Davis) Without the scarce dust jacket. Garrison A.27.1.a. Davis, p. 19. Hanna 3751. A Great War novella, published in England with the subtitle The Adventures of an American Soldier in the War of 1914-18. Wharton's first war story, as with A Son at the Front (1923), dedicated to her late friend Ronald Simons, who died during the hostilities. The story follows an ambulance driver serving at the pivotal second Battle of the Marne, a major victory for the Allies but at a cost of some 130,000 dead or wounded troops. "By 1918, with the Americans finally in Europe to bring the war to a close, [Wharton] was bringing out The Marne, a wartime melodrama of strikingly inferior quality about an idealistic American soldier and his socialite mother. Although this work is far from Wharton's best, it is one of her first forays into the relationships between parents and children, a theme which was strongly to mark her major novels of the 1920s." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
