About this title

Synopsis:

"It all began in the south of France a few summers ago--"

Charles is trying to conquer a writer's block in Paris when he is invited down to the Riviera by his Yalie friend Tom Swift. Once in Cap St. Sauveur he meets Tom's friend Roberta ("Berte") Prescott, who is travelling with her Aunt Martha, an attractive woman "of a certain age" whose first words to Charles are "I need your help. Can I count on you?" And with that both Charles and Tom are swept up in Marth'a plans for saving the town from itself.

Martha proves to be a woman of infinite resource, which includes a grand design for Charles. After he (not Tom!) has married Berte and forgotten his writer's block, Charles records Martha's many adventures under the title of Martha Polo. They include a kidnapping and mystery involving stolen art masterpieces, an unfortunate visit to an English country house, and a weekend in Normandy where Martha is mistaken for an English governess at a chateau where an insecure family is in the grasp of a greedy staff--until they meet their match in Martha. Charles also recounts Martha's trip to Las Vegas where, after one night at the gaming tables, she becomes the legend of the lady with an aigrette in her hair and a pearl-handled revolver in her beaded bag.

Aided, distracted or opposed by a collection of extraordinary people, including an ambitious Anglo-American dowager, a Sicilian prince, a sister who means well, a dangerously evil major domo, and a young man who starts out as a cabaret artist (M) and ends up as a prize winning writer (F) after a sex change--Martha faces them all and has her way.

Most important, when she meets a man who has been sorely tried by a first marriage and left despondent as well as suicidal, Martha points out that love and affection do not belong exclusively to the young. High in the Alps at his chalet she faces the challenge of restoring him to health and happiness-- for both of them?

With Martha Polo Mateo Lettunich has created a character who is a tonic for what ails you, a friend you can depend on as do all those she meets during her adventures on two continents. Martha is no Delilah, nor a Mme de Stael, but she is great company!

From the Publisher:

So begins Mateo Lettunich's suspenseful and highly original novel.

Ex-Yalie novelist Charles is struggling with a writer's block in Paris when he is invited down to Cap St. Sauveur, an idyllic seaside town on the Cote d'Azur which claims as its own the sun, the sand -- and mermaids.

There he meets "Berte" Prescott and her Aunt Martha, an attractive older woman of "a certain age," whose first words to Charles are "I need your help. Can I count on you?" He realizes at once that she can, and he is swept up in Martha's plans...

Whether at the gaming halls of Las Vegas or Monte Carlo (and she does not approve of gambling in any form!) Martha is a tonic for whatever ails you. Exhibiting the arch humor of Jane Austen, the cleverness of E.F. Benson and the comforting charm of Jan Karon's Canaan series, Mateo Lettunich has created a character who wisely realizes that love does not belong exclusively to the young, nor do excitement or suspense. But while she is solving everyone else's problems will Martha ever find time for a life and love of her own? Oh, yes...despite the odds! Because "Martha Polo" is the story of a thoroughly likeable woman of a certain age who discovers that true love is still possible if you find the right man in desperate need of just that and not willing to admit it.
