Book cover has two red ribbon markers; bottom and right side edges are slightly frayed. On title page, spine is slightly loosened at the bottom. Book has a good feel to it. Written in Spanish. Hernandez was an active social force in the late 19th century (b. 1834 - D. 1886). He is best known for his classic gaucho epic, "Martin Fierro". His family was engaged in cattle raising and he was prevented from having any formal education. Political events caused his family to send him to Brazil to live with relatives. When he returned, he settled in Buenos Aires as a journalist with the paper El Argentino. Later he founded the newspaper, "Rio de la Plata" which was soon shut down by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, the nation's president and also an author. Encouraged by a friend, Hernandez began to write a fundamental gaucho poem in which he captured the authentic speech of the gaucho and fashioning an eloquent attack on the social and political atitudes he opposed. That was the first part. The second part is twice the length of the first. Under a new administration Hernandez became a senator, serving until his death in 1886. Both parts are in this book.
