About this Item

No creases: as new unread. Number line 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15; the eighth printing. A book one might wish all politicians in America (almost the last place where Marxism is still embraced by an ill-educated ruling class -- the Russians having certainly learned better) might read. "The disjuncture between vision and experience was nowhere better illustrated than in the traumatic post-revolutionary experience of Lenin, as he applied the Marxist vision and watched a whole nation sink into economic chaos and starvation by the millions," Mr. Sowell summarizes. "Despite the massive intellectual feat that Marx's 'Capital' represents, the Marxian contribution to economics can be readily summarized as virtually zero. Professional economics as it exists today reflects no indication that Karl Marx ever existed. . . . What is said and done in its name is said and done largely by people who have never read through it, much less followed its labyrinthine reasoning from its arbitrary postulates to its empirically false conclusions." In brief, the depraved attempt to follow Marx's postulates in the East led to "wholesale slaughter," Mr. Sowell reminds us, while leaving the former breadbasket of Europe "dependent on grain imports from the West." 281 pp. including notes and index. Reduced from $55. Bookseller Inventory # 004082

About this title

Synopsis:

Sowell leads the listener through the Marxian scheme of ideas, shattering some existing interpretations of Marx which have developed through repetition rather than through scholarship. 6 cassettes.

Review:

‘Among the best short accounts of Marxism ever, whatever the reader’s own politics are. I found it a real pleasure to read, clear and tight, full of both common sense and intellectual rigour.’ – Bernard Crick

‘Very readable ... The non-Marxist Mr Sowell is distinctly successful in opening up the scope and brilliance of Marx’s very interesting mind.’ – Brigitte Berger, New York Times Book Review
