About this title

Synopsis:

Mutilated remains are discovered in an abandon warehouse in Baltimore. Detectives are assigned the case. The lead concludes it’s the handiwork of a gang called the Scorpions. His partner thinks he’s barking up the wrong tree, believing his judgment is clouded because the gang’s leader killed the detective’s mother in retaliation for sending him to jail. Albert grew up a prisoner in his home in rural Maryland and suffered great abuse, He watched his father murder his mother when he was eleven, and at sixteen, he sets out to find employment because of his father’s deteriorating health, securing a janitorial position in Baltimore. Years later, he’s staffed at a biopharmaceutical company and fortuitously discovers research on advanced face transplant, eventually allowing him to learn to perform them, even on himself, all the while scheming to kill Jill’s husband and take his place. Over the years, a longtime coworker, who is second in command of this notorious gang, but maintains a position as a janitor as a cover for his criminal life, taunts and mistreats Albert who kills him and his brother in ghastly fashion. The gang leader sends a group of men to find out why his guy is no longer answering calls. They’re gunned down by Albert at the biopharmaceutical facility. Shortly thereafter, Albert transplants Jill’s husband’s face onto his, and, surprises Jill who thinks her husband is away on business, showing up at the marital home, insisting the lights remain off. Jill, despite her struggling with the feeling something’s amiss, allows herself to be with him. Upon returning home, Albert finds other gang members waiting. He summarily kills them, too, then goes on the lam, setting up camp and a makeshift lab in the Appalachian Mountains where he transplants an officer’s face and kidnaps the detective’s girlfriend, believing she is the bargaining chip to get Jill back and gain safe passage for the two of them. But Albert’s scheme goes awry when the detective doesn’t follow his orders, and the gang leader he set a trap for, is, unbeknownst to him, being followed by CIA operative.

About the Author:

I wrote the book while considering the question of whether man is born evil or good, and exploring the types of people who commit evil deeds on a different level of inhumanity than run-of-the-mill criminals. The story grew out of a character I envisioned growing up in an environment where he experienced mostly cruel and immoral behavior by his father and had no other persons in his life other than his also abused mother, and she, only until he was eleven. On a personal note, I am married and have two children. I now reside in Arizona after having spent years living in New York and working at two well respected accounting firms before accepting a Controller's position at a boutique investment bank and working in the industry over the next several years.
