Synopsis: The Masters is one of the most highly regarded golf tournaments in the world. Each year, the best golfers from around the world compete for the championship.
From Booklist: The Sporting Championships series helps introduce a variety of the most celebrated athletic events. Each book contains a history of the event and a rundown of the rules of the sport associated with it to lay the groundwork for readers, then delves deeper into various particulars, with brief chapters titled “Historical Highlights,” “Legends and Current Stars,” and “Famous Firsts.” What’s most revealing from The Masters, aside from information on perhaps lesser-known records and past winners, is the rundown on how golfers qualify for the renowned tournament, as well as succinct coverage of the exclusive Augusta National Golf Club, which together help impart a suitable sense of loftiness. While the writing tends to hang information on dates and at times lacks contextual focus, this series does an adequate job of imparting how specific tournaments and championships evolve over time and could provide a welcome complement to more general overviews of each sport.
