About this title

Outside: something resembling Godzilla attacks the city. At the party, 'Faith' by George Michael is playing and someone is telling you to consider changing apartments.

From the Author:

Mastodon and Farm are two words that can mean a lot of different things. For instance: there is a song of the same name by the band Cake, and I think it is a reference to how people sometimes try and make meaning out of nothing and everything.
In the book, you drive a Ferrari and you have a lot of money. Joan Didion specializes in the sale and reproduction of African masks. James Franco lives with you and he is your best friend. Celine Dion talks about chocolate-covered fruit and probiotics (and likes to have sex with you). Ryan Gosling is your arch-nemesis. Kirsten Dunst is a drug dealer. Dean Cain likes to read a lot of books. California is just a few hours from New York (by car). The VHS market is still alive. You have no idea where Ashton Kutcher lives. Uma Thurman wears spanx. Gwyneth Paltrow is super into Andy Warhol. A man named Bruce Willis is really not Bruce Willis. Ken is a man who looks nothing like the real Ken doll. And you are not what you seem.
The story is something that is somewhat grounded in reality, yes. The characters are all human. Nothing too strange happens either: there are no extra-dimensional aliens or ghosts. Or, actually, yes. There are aliens in the book, and sea monsters and demons, and Godzilla and a few other things. But this is all something that has become a part of popular culture; there is a reason for all this. Direct references to certain figures like Joan Didion and Celine Dione and James Franco also--these all coalesce with the rest of the book. I don't have a cheat sheet or anything that explains why Joan Didion is somebody who specializes in the sale and reproduction of African masks ...but everything in the book is a piece of a puzzle that slowly becomes a whole. Or something like a spool of thread or yarn that is slowly becoming unraveled.
A few things that fascinated (or inspired) me while writing Mastodon Farm: witch hunts, high IQ societies, remote or mystery islands, factory workers, younger people pregnancies, speed boats, airplanes, Bruce High Quality, modern technology, love (of all types), the 1%, simulations, non-community communication, group dynamics, Mamet speak, playwriting, Dubai, Hong Kong at night, minimalism and dialogue in older films.
Mastodon Farm is a book for people who don't want (or like) to read books. It's for people who prefer to watch films and television. For people who enjoy something that is a little out-of-the-ordinary and not completely sincere. Something they will remember in the long run. Something that is really sad but in a totally not-sad way.
