About this title

Text and photographs depict the courtship and sexual behavior of animals including the golden toad, elephant seal, garden spider, and bower bird

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 4 A hodgepodge of scattered information which is sure to bewilder children. According to the CIP, this is about the ``courtship and sexual be havior of animals,'' but it's highly un likely that the picture book audience will have enough knowledge about re production to understand the mating habits described, and there's not enough information for older children. The text is simply captions for the stunning, full-color photographs. Terms are not defined; organization is loose. A photograph of golden toads is captioned: ``Beneath the water, the fe male toad squeezes out a long string of large eggs. Before these can grow into tadpoles, they must be fertilized by sperm from the male.'' End of ex planation. The next page shows a pho tograph of a golden pheasant; the cap tion reads ``Female animals choose their mates carefully, so the males try hard to impress them.'' Some of the information is fascinating; much of it is either poorly explained or irrele vant. Matchmaking is a mismatch of text, illustrations, and format. Trev Jones, ``School Library Journal ''
