About this title

Synopsis:

Years ago I realized I had questions: What did Jesus really do and say and believe? How much of the Bible can we believe (particularly when it contains contradictions)? Since the Gospels were written 40-90 years after the crucifixion, how do we get from them back to the historical reality?

This study guide presents not final answers, but the best answers I have found, along with my reasoning. Throughout, I encourage you to consider my arguments and then reach your own conclusion.

About the Author:

Growing up, Christopher was deeply immersed in Calvinistic theology, and wanted to be a Presbyterian minister. None of it made sense to him then, and in his teens he left the Presbyterian Church and all churches. For years he had no involvement in religion. About thirty years ago he discovered the Unity Church, and became a member for over a decade. As an offshoot of that he stumbled onto A Course in Miracles, which he studied and then taught for over a decade.

Lacking formal credentials for Biblical scholarship, he started out over a decade ago asking many of the same questions you are asking: "What do (or can) we really know-- about the historical Jesus? What did he really say and teach? How sure can we be?" He brings to this study an awareness of the complexity and difficulty of the writings of many great scholars on the subject, and also brings the desire to present the most credible discoveries and theories of the last hundred years in a clear and accessible form.

In his own words: "I have read numerous works of outstanding scholars. I have attempted to take their findings and beliefs and present them in the format of this study guide, so that the intelligent reader can see deeply into the original intent of the Gospel writer and can understand the connections between an individual selection and its sources and other Gospel parallels."

Christopher has a BA in English and an MA in Comparative Lit. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand. He has been a counselor in an inner-city school, worked with job-training programs, run a small home-repair business, been a small-town newspaper reporter and ad salesman, taught community-college English, and managed an apartment building for elderly. Now, semi-retired, he manages home-owner associations and perform weddings.
