Max Brand, the pseudonym of Frederick Schiller Faust (1892-1944), is, of course, one of the most prolific and legendary authors in the western genre. "Smiling Charlie" was first published serially in six parts in Western Story Magazine from February to March 1927 with the first clothbound edition published by Dodd, Mead, & Company in 1931. "Destry Rides Again" was first issued serially in six parts in Frank Blackwell's "Western Story Magazine" from February to March 1930 followed by both paperback and clothbound editions by Pocket Books, Inc. and Dodd, Mead that same year. As was their usual practice, Grosset & Dunlap only provides the novels' original publication dates upon this book's copyright page but this omnibus edition was probably issued circa 1940 and certainly prior to WWII as the its manufacture does not reflect lowered wartime production quality.
