Book Description Chartwell Books, Inc., Secaucus, New Jersey, U.S.A., 1973. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Parrish, Maxfield (illustrator). "Outstanding characteristics of Maxfield Parrish's genius are the uniqueness of his style and his magnificent manipulation of light and shadow. His early work was a model of a precise style of painting, a type of art that bridges the formal classical and the modern abstract style" (Paul W. Skeeters, "Preface"). Contents include: The Land of Romance, The Mazda Calendars, Murals, The Arabian Nights, The Golden Treasury and Poems of Childhood, A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales, Italian Villas and Their Gardens, The Knave of Hearts, The Great Southwest 1902, Dream Days and The Golden Age, Knickerbocker's History of New York and Mother Goose, and Commercial Art. Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) perfected a method of layering pure colors, one at a time, over a white underpainting, each layer covered with a coat of glaze. The layers of transparent color gave his painting a depth and luminosity that matched his painstaking technique and quest for dreamlike landscapes of an unreal and idyllic character. He studied art with Howard Pyle, the great illustrator/teacher, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. This is a large format book (14" high x 10" wide) that will necessitate extra shipping charges if service other than domestic U.S. media mail is requested, amount to be determined in advance. Clad in blue cloth, gilt lettering on the spine, with fading at the extremities and shelf wear at the edges and corners. Illustrated end papers, "Ye Royal Recepcioun." 350 slightly toned pages on glossy paper. Bright color reproductions dominate, in keeping with the artist's love of color. The text is largely confined to chapter introductions and brief captions. Slightly bowed boards, tightly bound, faint storage scent. An outstanding American artist whose work is still admired and eagerly sought. This book is quite scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 002956
