Synopsis: THE MAYA BOOK OF LIFE: UNDERSTANDING THE XULTUN TAROT is the companion book to the Xultun Maya Tarot Classic Edition (now available on Amazon). It explores the archetypes and alchemy of the major arcana of the Xultun Tarot through the analytical psychology of C G Jung, the teachings of Carlos Castaneda, Harley SwiftDeer Reagan, Hyemeyohsts Storm, and the Twisted Hairs, together with new interpretations by the author. The Maya Book of Life:

  • describes the story of the marriage of spirit and matter as told by the tarot
  • explains how the tarot is both the story of the union of opposites and also the separation of sames
  • explains the archetypal meaning of each of the major arcana
  • describes the Twenty Count, the Shields, the Moods of Stalking and the Movements of the Book of Life and how they apply to each card
  • explains the Cracking of the Mirror of Self-reflection
  • casts new light on the meaning of 2012
  • describes the ego's maturation and individuation over the lifespan
  • adds new depth and breadth to the traditional interpretations of Eurocentric tarot decks
  • compares the imagery and meaning of the Xultun Tarot to the Marseilles Tarot
  • clarifies the importance of the 9 (Sage) and 14 (Temperate Man) cards of the major arcana
  • explains the links between indigenous teachings, the tarot and medieval alchemy
The Xultun Tarot was created by Peter Balin in 1976 based on images from Maya history and culture. It was the first tarot not derived from the medieval European tarot or the Western occult tradition. The imagery and teachings of the Xultun Tarot are indigenous to the Americas and the cards are less encrusted with the layers of European tarot interpretation that have accrued over the centuries. Taken from a single painting, it is the only tarot deck where the major arcana form a complete picture. This picture is a symbolic image of the alchemical marriage of spirit and matter and a map of what Jung called the individuation process. Only 500 copies of the original Xultun Tarot were ever printed. Now Kahurangi Press has recreated this classic, long out-of-print deck true to its original large size and vibrant colours (xultun.com and kahurangi-press.com).

From the Back Cover: Each card in a Tarot spread presents a unique set of circumstances that enables the inquirer to stand aside and view their own psychological processes in a way few other methods allow. This use of the Tarot is brilliantly explored by Michael Owen in The Maya Book of Life which offers endless insights into the human psyche. As the painter of The Xultun Tarot and a Tarot author, I recommend it highly.   --Peter Balin, creator of The Xultun Tarot, author of The Flight of Feathered Serpent
Out of the Xultun Tarot, Michael Owen has created both a memory device and a philosophical machine that twists together the threads of spiritual alchemy, Jungian psychology, indigenous medicine teachings and DNA coding. Owen shows that, in Peter Balin's single painting of the twenty-two Major Arcana of the Tarot, we have a multi-textured tapestry that depicts the Self from a shamanic perspective. This is a profound book of wisdom that will richly reward the reader who has an affinity for these teachings. It offers a fresh look at the tarot and its myths and symbols that can take your personal work with any tarot deck to a new level.--Mary K Greer, author of 21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card
A brilliant, eye-opening synthesis of post-Jungian tarot and the shamanic genius of the classic Mayan civilization. Michael Owen shows a remarkable command of this important and original material. His psychological sophistication and savvy interpretations of the archetypes illuminate a more universal cosmos for the emerging 21st century tarot. A fascinating and inspiring journey of natural wisdom, Jungian depth, and timeless spirituality.--Arthur Rosengarten, PhD, psychologist, author of Tarot and Psychology: Spectrums of Possibility
This book is more than an impressive analysis of Peter Balin's artistic creation of the Mayan Tarot. It has warmth. It is to be in touch with Michael Owen's sensitivity to Nature and to his understanding of a world in which all living things are inwardly and outwardly connected.--Ian McCallum, psychiatrist, Jungian Analyst, former rugby Springbok, bush guide, author of Ecological Intelligence
The new edition of the Xultun Tarot is cause for celebration. The Xultun was the first "cultural" tarot, adapting the European images and structures to a very artistic and spiritual tradition. This has become standard but it was Peter Balin's deck that showed the way. It is fitting, therefore, that we now have Michael Owen's deep study, using the insights and wide-ranging knowledge of Jungian studies to open the deck up further and re-connect the Mayan images and teachings to traditional tarot, psychology, alchemy, and ancient wisdom teachings.--Rachel Pollack, author of Tarot Wisdom
In writing this book, Michael Owen has performed a dual service. First, he has brought the Xultun Tarot deck to the level of prominence it has deserved since first being revealed in 1976. Second, he has added a significant work to the corpus of Tarot literature. This book not only amplifies and illuminates the Xultun deck, but also provides a welcome reminder about how the Tarot enriches consciousness.--Kenneth James, PhD, Jungian Analyst
An inspirational book that uncovers not only an unknown part of New Zealand tarot history but reveals many mysteries about tarot itself. Together Peter Balin's original artistic genius and Michael Owen's depth analysis interweave many strands--Mayan mythology and culture meets European Western Mystery tradition; Jungian psychology blends with indigenous wisdom. The Maya Book of Life becomes a new World card in itself, where the past marries a multi-cultural present to dance the birth of our future.--Fern Mercier, tarot reader and educator, tarot.net.nz
I have been very excited and inspired by your impressive and sensitive integration of shamanism, alchemy and earth consciousness.--Renee Ramsden, Jungian Analyst
