He studied in Vienna and Berlin where he joined the "Freie Sezession," a group of artists that is considered the precursor to German Expressionism. In his exhibits in Brazil during the mid 1910s he was among the earliest artists to present modern art in the country. Segall was a founding member of the "Dresdener Sezession" in 1919. The group included artists Otto Dix and Conrad Felixmüller. The illustrations presented here were one of his last works while in Europe. Segall moved and settled in Brazil in the same year "Mayseh-bikhl" was published, 1923.David Bergelson (1884-1952) was Ukrainian Yiddish writer and founder of the "Kultur-Lige," a group of Yiddish speaking artists, writers and intellectuals. The aim of this group was the creation of a new, avant-garde Yiddish culture. The subject of Bergelson's writings often was the suffering of young people in the shtetl. He is one of the 13 poets executed in "The Night of the Murdered Poets" on August 12, 1952 on Stalin's order after a staged trial in August 1952.Binding slightly rubbed and bowed.
