About this title

Synopsis:

Ever since she landed in New York City more than fifty years ago, Hedi Bak has tried to unravel in her mind the reasons for the misdeeds of her home country, Germany. Like you, dear reader, she has not been able to come to any conclusion. For this reason, about forty years ago, she started trying to describe the circumstances as she witnessed them.

She, like everyone, had blinders on, but her family was strictly in the opposition. As a child, she lived with one ear in the house and the other outside. It was with great care that she kept her mouth shut. she could have been a danger to all around her. Today, she wonders how she made it through the turmoil of those years.

Those lessons of survival have served her well. From her work in Studio 22 in Chicago with her first husband, Bruno Bak, to teaching at Savannah State College, and from widowhood and surviving a paralyzing stroke to a new life with new husband Charles Counts in Nigeria, she indeed has survived with mazel, just the right amount of luck. Widowed once more at the age of eighty, she now lives a rather uneventful life in eastern Tennessee, ready at last to share her memories with you.
