Book Description Ryerson Press, Toronto. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. 370 pp, 381 pp, 396 pp, large 8vos (9 1/4" H) - 3 volume set. Volume 1 published 1968, volumes 2 & 3 1969. B&w photographs, maps. "General Andrew George Latta McNaughton, P.C., C.H., C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., was a patriot who served his country diligently as scientist, inventor, soldier and stateman for more than half a century. His full-time military career began with his enlistment in the Canadian Field Artillery, where his skill and ingenuity as a gunner earned him, by the war's end, the rank of brigadier-general and command of the Canadian Corps Heavy Artillery. His interest in science resulted in the invention of the cathode ray direction finder - the direct forerunner of radar - in 1923. (Volume 2) describes McNaughton's career in the Second World War from his appointment as Inspector General of the troops mobilizing to form the 1st Canadian Division until the end of 1943, when he was removed from command of the First Canadian Army. McNaughton had antagonized (General Sir Alan) Brooke by his unceasing fight for Canadian autonomy. (Canadian Defence Minister) Ralston undermined his position by detaching a corps and sending it to Italy. With that policy established, McNaughton said, it would be better for Ralston to put someone in charge who believed in it; he himself did not. Nor could McNaughton have served under Montgomery after the latter, in highhanded fashion, had refused McNaughton access to his own troops in Sicily. (Volume 3) begins with McNaughton's return from the overseas command in 1944, (following his career as governor-general, Minister of Defence,) delegate to the United Nations and member of its Security Council and Atomic Energy Commission; he was president of the Canadian half of the Canadian-U.S. Joint Board of Defence; and he was chairman of the Canadian section of the International Joint Commission, a body established to deal with water problems between Canada and the United States." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spines; very light edge wear; minor browning to edges of text blocks; vol. 2 has missing free front endpaper, large corner crease on page leaf 123/124, six pages with light pen lines in margins or underlining of text, tiny foxing mark in margin of page 157. Dust jackets have varying light to heavy edge wear/wrinkling/creasing, all have small to medium tears, vol. 2 has 3" chip on rear panel, vol. 2 has some very light browning, all are in mylar sleeves, vols. 2 & 3 have been price-clipped.
