About this Item

8vo. pp. 155, [1]. With numerous geometrical diagrams and illustrations. Bound in original gray cloth with gilt stamped circle design on front cover. The words "perfected in January - 1845 measure of the circle by John Davis" are printed around the inner circumference. Some rubbing to corner tips and extremities; spine caps neatly restored. Interior pages are generally clean; several leaves are unopened; the inside front cover contains an institution bookplate; pp. 16-17 show a stripe of light discoloration (due to a former bookmark or newspaper clipping). Upper corner tip is nicked on p. 47. An eccentric mathematical text where the author claims to have discovered the long sought solution to the problem of squaring the circle - i.e. - constructing a square with the area equal to that of a given circle. [See Bizarre Notes and Queries Vol. V, p. 109]. Bookseller Inventory # 000412
