About the Author: John W. (Jack) Cooley is in private practice in the Chicago area, he is a mediator and arbitrator on the ADR panel of JAMS (The Resolution Experts®) and an adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law. Formerly he served as a United States Magistrate, Assistant United States Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney for the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and a litigation partner in a Chicago law firm. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and is a decorated Vietnam combat veteran. He earned his J.D. from the University of Notre Dame Law School, spending a year of his law training in comparative and international law at the School s Centre for Legal Studies in London, England. Cooley has authored more than 80 articles, and also five books including The Mediator's Handbook (NITA, Second Edition, 2006); Mediation Advocacy (NITA, Second Edition, 2002); Arbitration Advocacy (NITA, Second Edition, 2003); The Arbitrator's Handbook (NITA, Second Edition, 2004) and the Appellate Advocacy Manual (Callaghan, 1989, supplemented through 1995). He is the principal writer and editor of The Creative Problem Solvers Handbook for Negotiators and Mediators, (2 Vols.) published in 2005 through the cooperation of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution and the Association for Conflict Resolution.
