The Textbook of Military Medicine (TMM) is a series of volumes on military medicine published since 1989 by the Office of The Surgeon General, of the United States Department of the Army. It constitutes a comprehensive, multi-volume treatise on the art and science of military medicine, as practiced by the United States armed forces. The books integrate lessons learned in past wars with current principles and practices of military medical doctrine. The spectrum of topics is broad, ranging from wound ballistics to medical ethics, and from considerations of harsh environments to applied biomedicine. The TMM series is intended to be tri-service in scope, although the majority of contributors are affiliated with the U.S. Army. The first line of medical defense in wartime is the combat medic. This work was supported by the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute and Defense Nuclear Agency. Textbook of Military Medicine Series on Combat Casualty Care, Part I: Warfare, Weaponry, and the Casualty, Volume 2. Topics covered include nuclear events and their consequences, acute radiation syndrome in humans, triage and treatment of radiation-injured mass casualties, treatment of internal radionuclide contamination, infectious complications of radiation injury, biological assessment of radiation damage, behavioral and neurophysical changes with exposure to ionizing radiation, psychological factors in nuclear warfare, long-term and low-level effects of ionizing radiation, radiological considerations in medical operations, and prospects for radioprotection.
