About this Item

Complete 15-volume set (12 text volumes + 3-volume index). 4to. Green buckram. xliii, 726pp; 365pp; x, 482pp; pp. 483-842; x, 480pp; vi, pp. 481-966; clv, 266pp; (6pp), pp. 267-650; vii, 472pp, iii; vi, pp. 473-1024, ii; viii, 426pp, iii; vii, pp. 427-986, ii; xx, 526pp; 700pp; pp. 701-1400. Numerous illustrations (some full-page and color), charts, tables, maps. Overall near fine. Tiniest occasional page edge smudge, else tight, clean, quite handsome. First edition of this complete facsimile of this huge undertaking, originally published by the Government Printing Office between 1870 and 1876, changing title along the way to "The Medical and Surgical History of the Civil War." As one source notes, it's "Arranged in a most confusing fashion. 3 medical volumes and 3 surgical volumes." As Nevins' commentator Archer Jones notes, it's "A compilation of elaborate statistics and numerous reports on various diseases and wounds." In either case, it's the end-all and be-all on the subject of Civil War medical practices. The original 6-volume set (published in 10 volumes here) is nearly impossible to find in decent collector's condition -- even this excellent facsimile set is rarely seen. The reproductions of the original color lithographed medical illustrations are outstanding, if disturbing. NEVINS I, 18. Bookseller Inventory # 33455
