About this Item

Cataloguers have universally identified "George Gregory" of the title- and copyright pages as the famous English physician (1790?1853), teacher, textbook writer, and advocate of vaccination. This is patently wrong. The author is based in the U.S. as is made clear by reading the pamphlet: The English George Gregory never lived in the U.S., and, indeed, on p. 18 we are told that George is the brother of Samuel Gregory, a founder of the Boston Female Medical College. George Gregory seeks here to champion his brother's cause of educating women to minister medically to women, especially but not exclusively as midwives in the broadest terms. "Does the fact that a man practises medicine give him any right to invade his neighbor's wife . . . ?" Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only five U.S. institutions reporting ownership. 8vo (22 cm; 8.5"). 48 pp. Removed from a nonce volume, with the two plates (which would have been near-pornographic in their time) torn out and present in laid-in facsimile, thus lowering the price considerably. Lightly age-toned, with a little foxing and spotting only. Bookseller Inventory # 32183
