About this title

Synopsis:

From the Foreword by Cal Stiller, M.D.:

"Canada's most respected liver transplant physician takes the reader on a stroll through his life, commenting on any subject -- from the annoying to the absurd, and from the inconvenient to the life-threatening -- that he and his patients have had to endure. . . . They will undoubtedly provide grist for the mills of those who view the medical profession with suspicion and wish to criticize it. But Cam Ghent can legitimately point out the flaws that need to be addressed because he has practised and researched in one of the most dynamic areas of medicine, contributed to its betterment, and earned the right (and he would say obligation) to critically opine on its shortcomings."

Topics include the controversial, such as euthanasia / physician-assisted suicide and questions of ethics; the entertaining, such as the implications of "social distance" and the temptations physicians have to diagnose outside the office; and the just plain interesting, such as medical mystery problem-solving, treating "numbers" as opposed to patients, and many others.

About the Author:

Dr. Ghent was born and raised in the rural community of Mount Forest, Ontario, Canada. After elementary education in a one-room rural schoolhouse, he attended Mount Forest District High School. Following two years of general science at the University of Western Ontario, he was accepted into the medical school there, graduating in 1970. Four years of training in internal medicine and gastroenterology in London followed and then three years in training and research in liver diseases at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. Returning to join the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario in 1977, he became a leading member of the liver transplant team at its inception in the early 1980s and remained affiliated with the teaching hospital and the transplant program until he retired in 2011. He was awarded the Distinguished Clinician award of the Department of Medicine in 2007 and the Distinguished Service Award by the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver in 2011. He lives in London with his wife, Vera Simon. In retirement, he enjoys bicycling, duplicate bridge, curling, fly fishing, fly tying (and writing).

This is the first book he has written for the general public, although he has authored more than 100 scientific papers, book chapters, reviews, editorials, and other scholarly works for the scientific community.
