The story of the author and his northeast Ohio family from 1917 (the author's birth year). The author's and family story continues through the Great Depression, being a teenager on a farm in the 1930's, going to Mount Union College and being employed, being drafted into the Army early in 1942, basic training at Camp McClellan, Alabama, being assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, and on-the-job medic training. In April 1943, the division was sent to Morocco, Africa for preparation for combat. On 9 September 1943, the division made an amphibious landing at Salerno beaches. On that date, Private Hazen was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for 'heroic achievement in combat' leading litter squads to the front lines and evacuating wounded. The author writes of the combat near the west bank of the Rapido River and the Gustav Line. Private, then T/5 Hazen received a battlefield Commission to 2nd Lieutenant, Medical Administrative Corps on 22 April 1944. After 137 days of combat, the 36th was shifted to another area of combat - southern France. On 15 August 1944, the 36th amphibiously landed southern France. The 36th advanced through southern France to Grenoble and Valence on the Rhone River. The author was reassigned to the division's AAA AW Battalion as a Medical Admin Officer. The battalion was 'The Lost Battalion' in the Vosges Mountains and had to be 'rescued' by the 442nd Combat Team. The author left Antwerp on 7 October 1945 arriving 'back home' (New York) on 19 October 1945. 144 pages. Inscribed on the complete inside of the front soft cover to the family Pastor.
